My husband posed a question tonight: why start this blog? What sets it apart? Is a woman’s experience in tech distinct enough to merit its own space on the internet? Now, before I ignite a feminist rally, his life mantra is “seek to learn.” He genuinely doesn’t discern the differences. A scientist, safety expert, and engineer amalgamated into one, for him, it’s about understanding the problem.
The succinct response is yes, it’s different. It’s the disparity of being the lone woman in a room, a woman with children that burst in on a leadership call, grappling with the omnipresent 24/7 American tech culture while juggling family, community service, and striving to retain shreds of sanity.
Do men in tech share some of these challenges? Yes, and I welcome those perspectives. I’m not unique, but I’ve yet to meet many woman like me—someone with the same career passions, love for family and community, and a fervor to enhance the space for future women. So, I opted to use the tool I’m proficient in: writing. I’ll provide tools for those awkward situations, and we’ll delve into what makes us unique.
Most women at my career level are exhausted; let’s be honest. They’ve propelled organizations, supported aging generations, raised families, and achieved exponential personal growth. We’ve strived to stay fit, healthy, and relevant in the workplace. It’s undeniably draining. So, where does blog writing fit into this melee?
The answer: nowhere. Hence, the conspicuous dearth of mid-life women bloggers, especially in the tech realm. Where did I find the time, you might ask? A brief career break—it wasn’t specifically for this. It took six months of downtime to rediscover my creative voice, and here I am. A break in time, that much-needed downtime, allowed me to carve out the time to pen down the words that needed writing.
Why on earth is it called Work Life Chaos? A great question. Nothing in life is simple. There’s work, there’s life, and in between, we strive for balance. Yet, for most of us, it’s more akin to organized chaos. I won’t delve into meal planning, beauty routines, or the latest fashion trends. While I appreciate those who focus on such topics (and frequent their blogs), I might reference them along the way.
Here, my aim is to be my authentic geeky self. Even if you’re not a tech person, I hope you can glean some value from what I’m writing. We’ll discuss non-tech topics like hobbies, health and career progression. There will be meme’s, bad food (recipes) and mom jokes. I invite you to join me on this journey and stay tuned in. Lots of nerdy fun to be had.
