PI Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) each year, aligning with the mathematical constant π (pi), which is approximately equal to 3.14159. This day honors the significance of π, a fundamental element in mathematics representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, used across various fields of science, engineering, and mathematics. PI Day not only celebrates the mathematical achievements but also engages communities with activities like pie-eating contests, discussions on the importance of mathematics, and educational events. It’s a day that combines the joy of learning with the fun of culinary pies, symbolizing the blend of education and enjoyment.
Two Activities to Engage People with PI Day:
- PI Digit Challenge: How many digitis of PI can you remember. For most it’s just the first 3. For this challenge I encourage you to try to memorize and recite as many digits of π as possible.
- PI Day Pie Recipe Swap: Host a virtual pie recipe swap within your organizations. Invite your coworkers to share their favorite pie recipes or photos of pies they’ve baked in honor of PI Day.
