February is the month of love. Love for partners, work and somewhere in there a little self love. Let me be candid – I’m terrible at self-love/self-care. The delicate dance of maintaining a sustainable self-care routine alongside the demands of daily life is a puzzle I’ve yet to solve. I can generously contribute my time and energy to everything else, yet when it comes to myself, I often fall short. Self-care, after all, is about providing yourself with what you truly need, be it a structured schedule, flexibility, or a sudden jolt to ignite hardcore focus.
For those of us confined to desk-centric jobs, the hazards of excessive sitting, shallow breathing, and prolonged screen time can take a toll on both mind and body.
Practical Self-Care Tips:
- Stretching: Many individuals in the tech industry encounter back problems in their 30s, and the culprit is often excessive sitting without adequate stretching. Combat this by incorporating stretches into your routine every time you stand up – a simple yet effective practice to counteract the effects of bad posture.
- Utilize a Sit-Stand Desk: The affordability of sit-stand desks has increased, making them a worthwhile investment. If you already have one, make it a habit to use it. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up, stretch, and hydrate, preventing hours from slipping by unnoticed.

- Healthy Routines: New Year resolutions often involve ambitious health goals, but finding simplicity is key. Instead of overwhelming your schedule, try integrating healthier activities into your existing routines. Turn your 1×1 meetings into walking sessions, maximizing the benefits of fresh air and exercise.
- Meditation Simplified: While dedicating 10 minutes to meditation might seem daunting, taking a few deep breaths can be equally beneficial. Incorporate short moments of calmness, such as five calming breaths after a meeting, to reset and refocus without the need for an elaborate meditation routine.
- Embrace the Outdoors: Spending time outside can be a game-changer. Whether it’s starting a garden or taking your laptop outside for a few minutes, the connection with nature can enhance focus and clarity. In my case, nurturing plants amidst the chaos of daily life became a calming ritual.
- Mindful Snacking: In a software-centric work environment, office snacks may not always be the healthiest. If available, opt for healthier choices or consider bringing your own snacks. Mindful eating contributes to better energy levels and overall well-being.
- Avoid Eating at Your Desk: Lastly, and admittedly the toughest for many of us, break the habit of eating at your desk. Step away, find a different space, and give yourself a mental break during meals.

Achieving balance is an ongoing journey, and these simple practices can make a significant difference. Remember, self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for sustained well-being amidst the demands of work and life.
